“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
Matthew 5:5 (KJV)

“Happy are those who are gentle they will own the land.”
Matthew 5:5 (Beck)

The word “meek” is also translated “lowly” in Matthew 21:5 speaking of Jesus when He was riding a donkey into Jerusalem.  The word means “A humility that is considerate, unassuming, gentle, mild, and meek”.  Meekness is not weakness but power under perfect control.  Jesus showed a greater power than armed might, the power of humble wisdom and penetrating love.  Meekness is controlled strength.  Essentially “meek” means:  1.To realize you’re not perfect and neither is anyone else.  2. To be unselfish and unassuming.  3. To be gentle and unobtrusive.  4. To be sensitive and gracious toward others.  5. To have a sensitive posture toward God and His will.  (This was taken from “The Pastor’s Minute” by Dave Williams)  Meekness is therefore, submission to God in true humility, having the power to hurt others but choosing not to; to rule emotions not emotions ruling you; the control of passions.  Psalm 37:8-11 “Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.  For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord they shall inherit the earth.  For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be; yea thou shalt diligently consider his place and it shall not be.  But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”  James 3:17 in the Living Bible says “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure and full of quiet gentleness.  Then it is peace loving and courteous.
It allows discussion and is willing to yield to others; it is full of mercy and good deeds.  It is wholehearted and straightforward and sincere.”  Notice the qualities of meekness that are mentioned in this verse.  The meek person is not given to extremes, having his emotions under control, and he is gentle in his treatment of others.  This puts him in quiet command of himself and eventually, of his surroundings.  Psalm 25:9-13 “The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will teach his way.  All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.  For thy name sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.  What man is he that feareth the Lord?  Him he shall teach in the way that he shall choose.  His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.”  The Living Bible renders verse 13 “He shall live within God’s circle of blessing, and his children shall inherit the earth.”  Do you want to inherit more property?  Walk in this meekness of heart and the Lord that made the heaven and the earth will bless you with soil and real estate for He has given it to the Children of men.  (Psalm 115:15,16)
